A Geography of the Troubles in the Borderlands

The four areas we use here to frame the chapter were defined during the interview process and reflect the ways in which many of the interviewees saw and reflected upon their local areas, the prism through which they experienced and interpreted the Troubles. Again, it was the framework of everyday life, of living with the border during this protracted period of violence, which is most immediate in their responses and memories. It is worth reiterating that – as with the somewhat different areas used similarly in Chapter 3 – these locales are not formal regions or our attempt to create regional distinctions but instead emerge through the specific focus of the accounts of the period we explore here. They are: Derry and the River Foyle; south-east Donegal and west Tyrone; south Fermanagh, west Monaghan and north Cavan; and south Armagh, south Down and north Louth.
